Animal Style Cheeseburger Bowls

These Animal Style Cheeseburger Bowls are inspired by the famous In-N-Out classic. Crispy fries are topped with a mustard fried beef, caramelised onions, melted cheese and a creamy burger style animal sauce. Served with fresh lettuce and tomatoes. It's the perfect speedy midweek meal, I am sure will be on your rotation for the lighter evenings.

Step 1

Start by heating a frying pan over medium heat and adding the lighter butter spread. Add the diced onion and sugar and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened, golden and caramelised. If the onions start to catch, add a small splash of water and continue cooking.

Notes

Gherkins:
If you have access to sweet relish, you can use 1-2 tbsp in place of the chopped gherkins, sugar and gherkin juice. Start with 1 tbsp and add more to taste depending on how tangy/sweet you like it.
Optional swaps:
Beef mince for turkey mince or chicken mince
Cheese slices for reduced fat grated cheddar
Lower cal option- reduce fries slightly and bulk with extra lettuce

Can I ask about the nutrition of this? In my calorie counter app the lean 5% mince and frozen French fries alone comes to 496 cals, then adding in all the rest of the ingredients comes out at 671 cals. Are the measurements incorrect?

Are you scanning the fries calories when cooked perhaps?

Yes the ones I have (supermarket own brand) only have the oven cooked calories, no cals for frozen. That's where it's adding up then!

Ahh that’ll be it, it’s frustrating when it comes to packet nutrition sometimes 🫠. If you’re scanning cooked values but weighing them frozen, the numbers won’t match. The easiest way is to either: – weigh and log them frozen (using a similar sort of brand) or – cook them, then weigh and log cooked As a rough guide they lose about 10–20% weight when cooked, so that’s where the difference comes from 🤍

Hey Sarah of course 125g lean beef mince from Tesco is 165 cals, McCain skin on fries per 100g frozen is 136 cals so for 125g 170 cals = 335 cals per portion for the beef & fries. Hope that helps
